Management of the Environment
The Port of Mostyn recognises its responsibilities towards the protection of the environment and maintaining favourable ecological conditions in the estuary. The Port is committed to developing sustainable operations and minimising any potential impacts they may have on the environment.
These commitments towards the environment are outlined in the Port of Mostyn Environmental Policy Statement, Safety Management System and the Waste Management Plan.

The Port undertakes a proactive approach towards environmental management by undertaking extensive monitoring of the ecology and morphology of the Dee Estuary and plays an active role in consultations with environmental regulators, wildlife groups and the local fishing community.
Dee Estuary and the Coast
Through extensive research, invertebrate surveys and bird counts, the Port has gathered a wealth of data and knowledge about the behaviour of the estuary and its natural processes. Regular hydrographic surveys and careful analysis of channel behaviour are undertaken data helps to minimise our dredging requirements.
Pollution control of river and estuary waters
The Port has in place an Oil Spill Contingency Plan as required by the Merchant Shipping Regulations 1998. This joint Plan is shared between the Port of Mostyn, the Dee Conservancy and Airbus. It contains procedures for responding to small scale spills, and external resources are utilised for significant events.
Bunkering operations are covered by the Mostyn Docks Limited Safety Management System, including a provision of a Bunker Checklist to the Harbour Master prior to any bunkering operations taking place as well as the risk assessments conducted by suppliers of bunkers. In the event of a pollution incident, the contingency measures of the Dee Estuary Oil Spill Contingency Plan are implemented.
Ballast Water Discharge
Due to the Dee Estuary being an ecologically sensitive area, vessels operating in the Dee Conservancy are advised against discharging water ballast within the estuary in order to avoid causing an impact on the native environment. Joint Agreed Procedures to minimise the risk of discharge of non-native species in ship’s ballast water and sediments are in place. The ballast water management procedures are in compliance with the DfT Marine Guidance Note MGN 363 (M+F) The Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments.
The Water Framework Directive (WFD) 2003 classifies the Dee estuary as a heavily modified water body. The WFD sets a target for such heavily modified water-bodies to achieve good ecological status by 2015 via implementation of River basin management plans. The 2015 target has already achieved a good ecological status and this status will be maintained by the environmental management and monitoring works carried out by the Port of Mostyn.
Mostyn Docks Limited Waste Management Plan contains procedures for acceptance, storage and disposal of the following shipping waste arisings
- Dry Garbage
- Galley (food) waste
- Sludge, waste oil and bilge waste
- Dry hazardous – Paint tins, Oil filters
As part of the Waste Management Plan, the types, quantities and origins of all vessel wastes are identified before the vessel enters the Port. A Pre-arrival Waste Declaration
is one of the documents required from ship’s master whose vessel intends to berth at the Port of Mostyn. The Port has arrangements with specialist waste management companies for proper acceptance, storage and disposal of all of these waste arisings in accordance with provisions of the Duty of Care Regulations. Onsite shipping waste collections are provided for contained storage of oily waste/rags and dry non-hazardous waste and galley waste. Sludge/oil water is collected by road tanker and are not stored at the Port. Records of all waste transfer notes are maintained for at least five years.
